Tamil Nadu CM Announces Additional 1,650 Medical College Seats from 2021-22
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday (01/march/2020) said about the allocation of fund. He added that Rs. 1200 crore has been allocated separately for the construction of new medical colleges in the state in the 2020-21 budgets.
The CM said that the state will be able to accommodate additional 1650 medical seats from the academic year 2021-22. It will be in addition to the existing 3250 seats filled in the different colleges.
Palaniswami laid the foundation stone of a planned medical college in Ramanathapuram. It is a government college. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning the building of 11 new medical colleges in the state. The proposed cost for it is Rs. 4500 – 5000 crore.
The Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan attending the function said that the fund of Rs. 23 crore has already been released. It is the first installment amount for the building of the government medical college in Ramanathapuram. He added that the Centre has taken the decision of revising student-teacher ratio and make addition in the postgraduate seats in the medical sector. He further said that over 14,500 postgraduate seats have been created in the last five years.
Harsh Vardhan, the Union Health Minister addressing the event said, “The health education is moving towards competency-based learning. We should strive to share the best practices from various medical colleges and states for the overall improvement of medical education in India.”
He further added, “The establishment of this medical college will help to overcome the problem of shortage of doctors in Tamil Nadu where better health facilities will be available to the people of this backward district.”
