Latvia : Country Overview
Latvia situated in north-eastern Europe with its spectacular coastline along Baltic sea is a cosmopolitan country for pursuing higher education. It shares its borders with Estonia, Russia, Belarus and Lithuania. Its capital Riga is largest city and a hub for education. It has linguistic links with Lithuania to the south, and historical and religious ties with Estonia to the north.
For centuries Latvia was primarily an agricultural country, with seafaring, fishing and forestry as other important economic factors. Like its Baltic neighbours, Latvia has made a rapid transition to the free market since the early 1900s.
As a developed country, Latvia has an advanced economy and ranks very high in Human Development Index. With a current population of 1.9 million the country has a temperate seasonal climate. Since the year 2000, Latvia has had one of the highest growth rates in Europe.
