Criteria for Practicing Medicine in India: A Guide for IMGs and FMGs
To become a doctor in India, there are two paths: Indian medical graduates (IMGs) who complete their MBBS studies within the country, and Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) who finish their medical education abroad. Both IMGs and FMGs must meet certain criteria, including passing the National Exit Test (NExT).
Previously, IMGs could obtain their medical license after completing their compulsory internship, which is part of the Indian curriculum. However, with the introduction of NExT, all medical students, regardless of their background, are now required to pass this exam to practice medicine in India.
FMGs used to have to pass the Foreign Graduate Medical Examination (FMGE) to practice in India. But now, with NExT, this requirement is no longer necessary. Moreover, FMGs who pass NExT can pursue advanced studies, including post-graduate programs in India.
To be eligible for medical practice in India, passing the NExT exam is mandatory. For admission to postgraduate specialty courses, students must clear NExT1, complete their internship, pass the final MBBS practical exam, and pass NExT2. Counseling sessions assist students in selecting their desired courses and seats. Admission to postgraduate courses is based on merit, primarily determined by marks obtained in NExT1, which remain valid for three years.
