The National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) in Philippines is a national level examination pre-requisite by the applicant for entry to any medical school in the Philippines. In other words, the National Medical Admission Test (NMAT) is a tool designed to improve and advance the selection process of applicants seeking admission in any Philippine medical school.

This exam is conducted twice every year, i.e. early in the year (i.e. March or April) or late in the year (October or November). The testing dates, local and abroad, are decided and announced by the CHED and CEM. Medical Universities in Philippines also offer tutorials for International students to assist them to pass the NMAT test without any difficulty.

WHY IS NMAT REQUIRED in Philippines ?

NMAT was developed from a constant concern so as to screen competent and capable candidates who are aspiring for a medical degree. The purpose of this exam was to improve the quality of medical education in Philippines which would promote the medical profession to a complete new level of proficiency after evaluating their potential which is necessary in the successful pursuit of medical education.

The NMAT scores achieved by a medical student/applicant give sufficient and valid information by carefully evaluating him before giving admission to any medical college. In order to get admission in the best medical colleges in Philippines, the students are motivated and encouraged to do well in NMAT test which further helps them in achieving the best possible score.

REQUIREMENTS/ ELIGIBILITY :

Only Graduates or Graduating Students (by the end of the current school year) of college (Bachelor’s) degree programs are qualified to take the NMAT.

After completing 10+2 from India, one has to enroll for BS course (which is about 16 Months to 20 Months, depending on the University). 10+2 students are eligible for NMAT test, and can enroll themselves for MD course after completing BS Course. Basically, the BS course is a degree course which is mandatory for admission in MD course as per American education pattern; however, in some Philippines universities , if you did BS from the same university and somehow did not get minimum 40 percentile marks in NMAT, university allows you to sit in MD. In some of the medical universities a minimum 40 percentile is not required.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TEST

It is sometimes considered as a MCAT equivalent, which is held in the United States.

                                                         NMAT EXAM

The NMAT is a two-part test: Part I consist of tests of mental ability and Part II tests, of academic proficiency.

Part I is a 200-item test with four subdivisions, which are on Verbal, Inductive Reasoning, Quantitative and Perceptual Acuity Skills and is a three-hour exam. Part I measure aptitudes that were found to have significant correlations with academic performance of medical students

Part II is also a 200 item test in the field of Basic Sciences such as, Biology, Physics, Social Sciences and Chemistry and is two-hour-30-minute test. Part II measure subject proficiency in areas which are part of the academic background required of applicants to do the medical course.

In total, 5 hours and 30 minutes exam in a day.

TEST RESULTS :

Generally its results are declared in about 15 working days, and a candidate can get the admission as per college requirements. The grading system is percentile ranking from 1- to 99+ & marks are given ranging from 200 to 800.
